Mrs. Pauls Parchment Baked Fish Review

Please ignore the fattening potato and honey mustard salad dressing next to the nutritious fish :-p

Hey everyone! A while back, I was one of the “Foodbuzzers” who got selected to try and review the new Mrs. Pauls (Van De Camp in some parts of the country) parchment baked fish.  I was tickled to get chosen because I absolutely LOVE fish and have always had good experiences with the Mrs. Pauls products.

It took me a while to get to this post for obvious reasons if you’ve been reading my blog lol, but here is my review.

As always, my review will be 100% honest even if it makes me find hitmen outside my door tomorrow.

I got one package each of the Classic Grilled flavor and the Garlic Butter flavor. Tonight I tried the classic grilled. As I always try to do with a review product, I didn’t “do” anything to it, just cooked per the directions.

Truthfully, I don’t think I’ll be buying this one myself though I’m extremely grateful for the free coupons I received. This smelled wonderful cooking so I had high hopes for it. But when I put it on my plate, I was surprised at how small the portion was. I have a teenie tiny appetite that gets me in trouble half the time but this was small even for me. The entire pack (two servings) is 7.2 ounces. When we got it, it was on sale for $3.99 with the normal price being $6.99. So we’re looking at about the equivalent of 15 dollars a pound. Truthfully, I can’t see paying that for convenience. I can buy fresh fish for much much less.

Taste… God, I feel mean with this review. 🙁 But it wasn’t very good. The fish was very soft… not tender, but soft, rather like if you brined meat for too long and it takes on that mushy texture. And it was far too salty and had an off spicy taste that I couldn’t identify. All in all, I wanted FISH flavor but what I got was a salty/ spicy flavor that overpowered the fish.

Bottom line? It was a no go for me (why do I get the feeling that the Mrs. Pauls people will never ever let me review their products again? And that makes me sad cause I absolutely LOVE their battered and/or breaded fillets). Price? Too much. Taste? Not worth the price or even a lower price. Portion size? Small even for a tiny appetite.

Again though, this is just MY opinion and I DO love many of their other products. Also, I still have the garlic butter ones to try and if they are better, I’ll happily update this review.

As part of the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program, I was supplied with coupon for free products from Mrs. Pauls. My opinions are my own and not that of anyone else.

  1. Thank you for being so honest in this review! I remembered reading that you would rather not speak specifically about a recipe that you considered bad, so I know this post did not come easy.
I do not buy this type of product at the grocers anyway. Have a great day Janet.

  2. An honest review is hard to come by–or at least a neutral/negative one, since the practice tends to be if it’s not a positive review, don’t post it. But I appreciate your honesty! I much prefer fresh fish to anything frozen, so I think you’re right on base here 🙂

  3. Florida is full of freshness, we catch our own right at the ocean called surf fishing… we could never think of eating this kind of fish… its like comparing real wood to particle board lol… you are a trooper to be able to be honest about this especially under scrutiny with being a food publisher, your A ok in my book this is fabulous and I admire you !

  4. Love your honest review! It always sucks being negative, but it’s never good to lie, I deal with my forever guilty conscience when I write my restaurant blog but everyone always appreciates the honesty.
